Overview
Verdelho is a white grape variety grown throughout Portugal and is one of the four main styles of Madeira wine. Historically used for fortified wines, it was planted in Stellenbosch for its suitability to warmer climates and proven success as a table wine in regions such as the Douro and Swan Valley.
Vineyards & Harvest
A trellised vineyard planted in 2005 on a southern slope. Grapes were hand harvested, sorted, and destemmed before fermentation.
Winemaking
Fermented in 60% first-fill French oak barrels, with the balance split across 20% second-fill and 20% third-fill barrels. Only the best eight barrels were selected and blended. The wine matured for 10 months in oak. Total production: 3,000 bottles.
Ageing Potential
The wine can be enjoyed now, but will benefit from bottle ageing for three to five years.
Suitability
Suitable for vegetarians but not for vegans.
